Sprout Cafe

Toasted Ciabatta and Trio of Dips...Lovely!

Yum Yum Yum is all i'd wish to say for starters on  this post on Sprout Cafe! Family came down to Brissy for a week long holiday and so the food hunters were treated to a series of 'good eating' in the past week. Sprout Cafe has lovely soft wooden furnishings, dim lighting and the layout so simplistic that the whole dining experience felt casual and somewhat communal.

We shared a plate of dips and you can tell immediately that is all home-made. The trio comprised of an Olive tapendae, Beetroot and the last tasted something like a sweet Kumara dip.

The Entrees:

Excuse us for not remembering the dishes in their entirety as we assumed they would appear on Sprout's online menu. Apparently, the menu is not quite updated as yet. The Scallops were cooked to perfection and sat atop a delicate smooth cauliflower puree, if i were to recall correctly. This dish comes with pancetta but it was omitted due to a non-pork eater.

The Tea Smoked Duck came with a Vietnamese style salad. The duck breast was moist & tender and the green dollop tasted much like a Thai curry if you get the idea Ha! The tea flavour was subtle though and it didn't quite pull through as a result of certain strong flavours on the plate.

The sugar cured Kangaroo fillet was served with a Beetroot relish and warrigal greens. Great flavours and nice char on the fillet. Beetroot relish could just be toned down a lil on the sugar department as this dish could overall be too sweet for some.

The Mains:

Mum had the Tempura Whiting Fillets and she really loved it for its light, crisp batter and the nori that wrapped around the succulent fish. The Asian vegetable salad & wasabi mayo were great accompaniments.

Dad really enjoyed his grilled Eye Fillet Steak with roasted Kipfler potatoes and Prosciutto wrapped beans. Cooked medium rare and it was perfect size for the elderly i.e. 65yrs old.

Mr food hunter had the Middle Eastern braised Beef Cheeks with pearl barley couscous and an Eggplant sorta relish. The cheeks were cooked till tender soft. Overall, the meat had plenty of strong spiced flavours, including the eggplant. At the sametime, the cheeks were a little too sweet for Mr food hunter's liking.

The Rose Geranium Creme Brulee with Poached Pear was shared between Mum and Mr food hunter. Four thumbs up !!

Alastair Mcleod sat behind us and all patrons got to pat his amazing dog that sat so very well-behaved outside ; )

Sprout Cafe certainly makes it to our top list of restaurants around Brisbane; great food at reasonable prices, pleasant, attentive service on a very busy friday night. It is a place that we are sure people would love to re-visit again. And isn't it bonus that its BYO too!!!
