Marine World Seafood Cafe
Mr food hunter was craving for good seafood on his birthday and a quick check on Urbanspoon saw Marine World on the no. 2 spot. Reviews from others were excellent and we decided to make a day going about the East side of Brisbane.

Toasted Ciabatta and Trio of Dips...Lovely! |
Yum Yum Yum is all i'd wish to say for starters on this post on Sprout Cafe! Family came down to Brissy for a week long holiday and so the food hunters were treated to a series of 'good eating' in the past week. Sprout Cafe has lovely soft wooden furnishings, dim lighting and the layout so simplistic that the whole dining experience felt casual and somewhat communal.

Thai Orchid
Last night, we had dinner with Miss food hunter's cousin and her friend who have flown from Sydney to Brisbane for the nationals synchronized swimming competition. The competition was held over the Easter weekend at the Sleeman Sports Complex and thus, their team resided at Chandler's. Due to the location, we thought we'd head out to Royal Thai at Springwood as we remembered the food to be pretty good...this was about 8 years ago! And so, armed with a bottle of Marlborough Sauv blanc we marched in ready for a feast for four!

Malaysia Makanan
Malaysia Makanan offers a menu resembling that of Little Singapore. Additionally, there are many other shared dishes in the form of a single select protein or vegetable in your choice of sauce, several of which are inspired from Thai and Peranakan cuisines. There is also a daily lunch specials menu with dishes starting from approx. $9.

Thai Aroy
Miss food hunter used to live around the corner from Thai Aroy and we visited once when they first opened doors several years ago. We remembered the dinner to be good. Since Thai was on the cards, we thought this may be a good opportumity to return for a sunday lunch with the family.

A Salt & Battery
A Salt & Battery is where we head to usually for good fish & chips and it is also a very convenient location for us. It was a busy sunday lunch hour with quite a few tables of bigger groups and therefore, the dishes took quite a while to be churned out.
Mr food hunter had the Single Combo which consisted of crumbed calamari, crab claw, a piece of battered Cod and chips. Perfectly cooked, no complaints, all ingested and washed down with a bottle of citrus pink MASH drink!

Egg Bistro
Woolloongabba is an area we are not too familiar with, so when Miss food hunter suggested we try Egg Bistro, I am always adamant that she has clear instructions to get there. Alas, even with directions in hand we still managed to drive pass this very inconspicous eatery. So for our readers we decided to take a roadside picture to help with the spotting.
Eggbistro is located on a busy main road, so we were a little uneasy about how much we might enjoy the atmosphere with so much traffic beside us. Thankfully once we stepped in, we were well isolated from the busy world outside. The decor inside is warm and relaxing with soulful music in the background to further set the mood. There is the option of sitting in the courtyard behind, which is great on a cool night.
Egg Bistro offers a concise menu of entrees and mains, with a few additional specials. We ordered the Lamb Rump with white polenta and shakshouka and a Chicken Brie sandwich for lunch. The Goat's curd with roast tomatoes & toast must have been a popular choice for breakfast as we first opted for the goat's curd risotto and had already sold out.
The Lamb Rump was a well though out dish as the components worked together and were cooked perfectly. A nice sticky jus in combination with the flavours of the morrocan spiced shakshouka created a lively well-balanced sauce for the lamb rump. Sitting beneath the rump is a white polenta mash that is lightly-seasoned for a reason.
The Chicken sandwich was composed simply of a grilled chicken fillet, brie, cos lettuce, slices of avocado and a light spread of mayonnaise. As a lover of sandwiches, the use of crusty polenta bread (our guess) was a good change to other leavened breads and the aged brie provided a nice subtle pungency. But at a cost of $16.50, which is expensive for a simple sandwich, one would expect either more substantial fillings or an additional side salad.
Overall, we love the ambience, the concept of the food, the execution, the service and it is really a pleasant place to return to. But we would wish for slightly increased portions with both dishes or adjusted pricing for lighter meal options and particularly so, for a lunch service.
Yes, we did linger on a little longer with a solid cuppa Genovese cappuccino and affogato....

Little Greek Taverna
It has been a quite while since we've last visited West End and so last sunday, we decided to check out which eateries have resumed business. It was nice to see that a good number of places were still operating although the vietnamese and thai restaurants opposite the coles remained shut. Lately we have been watching Come dine with me Greece and with that on our minds, our bellies settled on this popular eatery for lunch.
Normally Miss foodhunter is put off when the words 'cheese bread' are used to describe a dish as the idea of greasey melted oily cheese pops into her mind. Thankfully when our starter arrived it was nice to see that it wasnt the case at all. This dish is light and lovely to eat. The rich tomato puree is a refreshing contrast to the olive oil drizzled bread and fetta and looks absolutely stunning sitting on the plate. The only criticism I have with this is I wish the bread was more toasted to give it a bit of texture.
After such a good looking starter I was a little disapointed with the appearance of the lamb shank. A bit small and sad looking for my liking but tender and juicy all the same. At $12 though I cant complain too much. The potatoes are prepared nicely with a squeeze of lemon over the top to justify the name. In addition to the choice of potatoes, you can also choose to have greek salad or chips on the side.
When this dish first arrived we were a bit apalled by the amount of char on the john dory. But we didnt raise any alarms as we thought this was their style of cooking, I mean what chef in their right mind would still send out something so 'charred'?? After the first bite though, it was clear something was really wrong with the preparation as the flavour of the fish is completely overwhelmed by a burnt taste as well as a liberal sprinkling of salt. I could imagine this dish being really pleasant had the fish been cooked right.
We have heard many good reviews about this place but after this experience, we do have mixed impressions. There is cleary potential for good food to be served here but can be let down by 'some' poor execution.

Rouj
Rouj is a modern lebanese restaurant located at Rosalie, a few doors away from Grill'd Burgers. It was from another blog that introduced me to this place and the positive comments prompted me to pay an early visit to this little eatery opened only 4-5 weeks ago. Rouj is a family run business; the husband manages the restaurant floor while his wife and mother runs the back kitchen.
We were probably the first to arrive for lunch, received a friendly greeting and were shown to the display cabinets shortly after we perused the menu. There we were introduced to an array of dips, salads, savoury bites and pastries, marinated meats and sweets. All of which you can find in the menu and the mere sight of them stimulates the appetite!
We settled with the Shisk Kebab set that comes with a choice of either taboulie or fattoush salad and chips (fattoush we chose), the Eggplant salad, the Silverbeet roll and a skewer each of the prawn and fish.
Wow the eggplant salad was great! This is a definite first for my tastebuds. The smokey mushy eggplant with a good lemon acidity contrasted nicely with the sweet burst of pomegranate. The serve of lightly charred pita was good for mopping up this salad.
The silverbeet roll was packed with more chickpeas than rice and once again had a strong lemon acidity. The labneh (yoghurt dip) served alongside it served as a better accompaniment to the savoury spiced fish and prawn skewers. The marinade was garlicky and the spice blend is different to that of the Turkish and Greeks. "New" flavours are always good! The fish and prawns were grilled beautifuly though there was a little fishy-ness detected with 2 of the 5 pieces.
The Shish kebab i.e. the lamb back strap was tender and juicy. Though it was lightly marinated, the tahini sauce helped with the overall flavour of the kebab. The flatbread was lightly charred, crispy yet soft. The Fattoush salad was fresh with a good flavour punch from the spices used and the fried bread pieces were served atop the salad greens. The chunky chips were an unusual addition but were crispy-good nevertheless!
Good food and friendly service. Will certainly return again with friends!
