Archive's Schnitzle is really popular amongst the diners and we see why...THE SCHINITZ comprises of a large, moist, tender chicken breast deep-fried to perfection and served with creamy, chunky mushroom sauce and crispy thick-cut beer battered chips. It really is a very hearty dish...Burrrrrp!

Morrison Hotel
The quest to sample some of Brisbanes' greatest steak houses continues with a trip to the Morrison Hotel. The Morrison Hotel is quite easy to spot driving along the motorway heading in to the city although it can be a little tricky working out how to enter as you do need to use a bus lane. The interior is fairly modern with seating indoors and out. We were greeted at the door by a friendly waitress who provided us with our menus and a kids menu for my little nephew.

Bavarian Bier 2
Here are a few additional dishes from a recent dinner at Bavarian Bier. Despite it being a monday night, the restaurant was packed to the brim! We had to settle for high stools at the bar area in the end. Mr food hunter had the Bavarian Tasting Platter this time as the Munich Brewers Platter was just too much to ingest as per 1st visit!
The rest of the folks had each,

Pig & Whistle Indooroopilly
Okay, Pig & Whistle (PW) was a rather impromptu decision. For all these years shopping and dining at Indooroo Westfield, we never stepped one foot in PW. Mr food hunter had a cold beer craving so Pub grub it was! But the sudden downpour this afternoon prompted us to seek shelter from undercover parking and so we quickly decided on PW.
PW's Fleet Street restaurant was fully packed (we noticed many were there for the Devonshire Tea) and so we proceeded to the bar where we can order from behind the counter and off a similar food menu.
We had a Kronenbourg 1664 on tap and a Jacqueline's Ridge Sauv blanc. The wine list was surprisingly long for a pub! Miss food hunter satisfied her bread craving with some turkish bread and dips while Mr food hunter had the hearty London Mixed Grill.
The Marlborough Sauv blanc had good nose but the palate didn't deliver as the bottle must have been opened for sometime. The turkish fingers were lightly warmed through and served with a duo of dips; one a corriander nut pesto and the other was hummus with a strong tahini background.
The London Mixed Grill consisted of a skewer of rump, lamb cutlet, home-made sausage, bacon, buttered peas, mash and onion gravy. The highlight was the thick & juicy home-made sausage that was likely a product of lamb, herbs and one or two unfortunate bits of cartillage....rrrustic!! The remaining meats were abit tough but nicely marinated, the bacon had a drizzle of honey and the onions were sweet and caramelized. Overall, a decent pub fare!
When we entered PW's bar, it was near 1-ish pm and it was pretty quiet (& relaxing) but not long after, service picked up and the atmosphere of a normal sunday pub afternoon was revived!

Bavarian Bier
Wow! We had such a great evening with a few of our dear friends, the eve of Australia day. Fortunately, we booked ahead as the restaurant looked to be swamped of people sitting and standing shoulder to shoulder. Talking turned to par-screaming as we were saturated in a sea of noises....yep even the loud music was drowning in it too! In anycase, it somewhat brought out the feel good holiday mood.
Now onto the food...we ordered a Tuna Nicoise, a Munich Brewer's Platter, a Bavarian Tasting Platter, a Zurich Veal and a side of Bread basket and Sauerkrat. The Pork Knuckle was our friend's first choice but had sold out early in the night and so, she settled for a Roast Pork Belly instead.
Munich Brewers Platter, Heart Attack on a plate! |
The Munich Brewer's Platter is truly a meat lovers heaven. The chicken schnitzel was full of an indescribable flavour and perfectly cooked. This was the highlight of the plate and is a definite must try. There is a good selection of smokey sausages and ham combined with creamy mashed potatoes and crispy onions for texture. The only short coming of the plate was the crispy crackling pork. The crackle was stiff and hard with the pork meat underneath not tender enough either. Ideally when roasting pork, the skin should puff, making it light and 'crackle', while the fat layer underneath melts to keep the meat moist and tender. This seemed likely the case of wrong cooking temperatures?? Sadly all of our friends who had roast pork on their plates had similar issues.
Bavarian Tasting Platter, Gentler on the Tummy! |
The Bavarian Tasting Platter is essentially the mini version of the Munich Brewer's minus the grilled Kassler. This would be the ideal choice as the latter, was a real feat to finish.
The Roast Pork Belly as a 'main' was served with a tasty green apple compote and sauteed potatoes. Like everyone else though the roast pork had the same letdowns. Our friend also mentioned that the meat layer was a bit thin. Thankfully everything else was alright!
The veal was slightly overcooked, but tasty nonetheless with the accompanying mushroom cream sauce. The rosti was perfectly crisp.
It was the desserts eventually, that gave a nudge up the food expectation laddar. Not perfect but still they were satisfactory sweet-endings...
The Apple Strudel was a delight. Warm crispy layers of pastry and thin slices of tangy apple in between, eaten with vanilla ice-cream...Yum! This is a must order dessert that is not overly sweet.
Easy to eat, Walnut and Date pudding |
Chocolate Delice with summer Berries and toasted Almond ice cream |
Death by chocolate sums up very well this dessert! Our friend who is a real chocolate/dessert fiend struggled to get her way through this supremely decadent dessert. In her opinion, she would have preferred a biscuity base and also more proportionate chocolate layers. Here, the mousse/brulee in between was a little too thick. This is a dessert best shared.
As mentioned, it was indeed full-house and service staff were kept very busy on their feet! So this time, we shall forgive the overcooked meats, the hard crackle and the melty ice-creams when served. And hey... there were some highlights to be remembered too! With such an extensive beverage and food menu plus an added bonus of a great interior and atmosphere, why not make Bavarian your next venue for gathering with friends?!
Note from the waiter....fridays and weekends are indeed busy (loud) days so avoid these days if a good conversation with friends is on the agenda.

Archive Beer Boutique
We visited Archive Beer bistro sometime end of last november for an early weekday lunch and as it was sometime ago this shall be a short post. We opted to sit alfresco as it was beautiful weather. After placing our orders at the front counter we headed to the bar for a glass of beer on tap and a sparkling.
Shortly, our orders of a Rib fillet burger and a Grilled Prawn and avocado salad arrived. The Rib fillet was tender and the chips were golden and crunchy. With the salad, the mixed greens were fresh and abundant in a citrusy dressing. The prawns were plump and were grilled to the extent that we could munch the juicy sweet heads and ingest the legs! Yum!
Overall, Archive serves quality pub food and next time we shall return night to check out the atmosphere and sample their "Bistro styled" dishes. According to the Archive website, there may be a new head chef at the helm now.
